Spelt is a type of grain that is related to wheat grain. It is also referred to as an “ancient grain” meaning it has been grown and farmed the same way for thousands of years.

Description

Spelt is also known as dinkel wheat, hulled wheat & German wheat. Generally, it comes in two forms: whole grain or flour. Because it is related to wheat grain, it is not gluten free, so it is not suitable for people with gluten intolerances.

Spelt has an earthy and somewhat bitter flavor, similar to that of wheat and rye.

You can cook the grains in a similar way to rice (after an overnight soak in water) and add it to salads, stews, curries, or even as a breakfast porridge.

How To Cook Spelt Grain:

  • Rinse grain under water to remove any dust and debris.
  • Add to a large pot, cover with water and allow to soak for 8 hours or overnight.
  • Drain the spelt before adding back into a pot along with fresh water or stock. For 1 cup of grain, add 3 cups of fluid.
  • Bring pot to the boil, before reducing the heat to low and simmer for 45-60 minutes or until tender.
  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Drain any excess liquid, fluff the grains with a fork and allow to sit, covered for a few minutes before serving.
