Dried green peas are simply a mature pea that after harvest, is dried for storage. Dried peas can be found in many varieties, including green peas, yellow peas, and split peas.
Fresh peas have a sweeter flavour while dried peas tend to have a slightly nutty flavour and firmer texture. They are a versatile addition to cooking and can be stored for months.
How To Cook Dried Green Peas:
- Rinse peas under water to remove any lingering dirt or debris.
- Cover and soak the peas in water for 6-8 hours. This will reduce the cooking time.
- Add peas to a saucepan and cover with water (enough to cover the peas in about 5cm of water)
- Bring pot to the boil, reduce to a simmer, cover and cook the peas for 45-55 minutes or until tender.
- Check the water level throughout cooking and add more if needed.
- Drain peas, season with salt and pepper and serve.
