Rye flakes (Or rolled rye) are rye grains that have been steamed, flattened, rolled and dried, like old-fashioned rolled oats.

Description

You can use rye flakes as a substitute to rolled oats in recipes like porridge, overnight oats or in muesli & granola. They have a taste and texture is very similar to rolled oats but a little on the sweeter side.

Along with its wide use in breakfast recipes, you can also add the flakes to breads, muffins either mixed into the dough or sprinkled on top.

How to Make a Simple Rye Flake Porridge for One:

  • Add 35g of rye flakes to a pan along with 150ml of milk or water & a tsp of honey or sweetener of choice. You can also add a tbsp of linseed, flax seed, chia seed or Sunflower seed here if you want. If adding a tbsp of chia seed, add an extra 50ml of milk.
  • On a medium heat, bring oats to a simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  • Cook until oats (and chia seed) have absorbed the milk & water or until desired consistancy.
  • Serve with extra honey drizzled or maple syrup & top with fresh fruit.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight. Use within 6 months.
